  • Mrs. Ohms helps out in the 4th grade room for two hours each Thursday morning. Mrs. Kay McKeever often volunteers in the room throughout the year. I'll use a blue marker for grading, they will use black markers.

Reading

Toto is a tale about a boy named Suku. His friends call him a coward because he is afraid to walk through the bush with only a spear or stick for his protection. Instead, he stays in the village where it is safe. Toto the elephant has no fear at all. When Toto wander from the safety of the animal reserve, Suku tries to summon courage to help him.

Spelling- Pretests are on Monday. If a student achieves a 90% or better on the pretest they qualify for studying the Challenge list that week. Fridays are test day for both the Regular and Challenge lists. Both the regular and challenge list tests are used in the student grades.

Religion-In fourth grade students learn the Morning Offering, the Memorare and the mysteries of the Rosary. (Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous, and Glorious) We will start out the fall 2010 memorizing the Morning Offering and Memorare

Math

Chapter One lessons include place value and money, comparing and ordering numbers  through the billions, rounding, counting money, making change and using fractional parts of a whole expressed as decimals.

There are 2 sections in the math book that you can do at home for additional reinforcement.  They can be found at the end of each math chapter and are called "Reteaching" and "More Practice."  They have several questions for each lesson and these can be an excellent tool to retain math knowledge.  Please help to get the math books back to school each day for math class.

Sometimes parents ask what they can do at home to help their child in math.....A good strategy is to preview the next day’s work with your child the night before so they really shine in class. It’s a great way to give your child a boost of confidence in math. Also I have extra multiplication and division timed tests available in the room for anyone who wants to practice them at home. I hide them right in the room, on the back table, out in the open, all day long for students to take home.

This is my fifth year teaching at Notre Dame. I graduated from Saint Mary's of Notre Dame a few years ago then received my Masters in Elementary Education specializing in Curriculum Design from DePaul University. I taught for 14 years in Park Ridge, Illinois in the Park Ridge public school system. Over those years I taught first, second and third grades. I am so impressed with Notre Dame school. It is a wonderful learning environment and I am very happy be a part of the team.

This website should be fairly up to date with upcoming tests and projects due dates. However, this in no way exempts the students from their responsibilities. All students are expected to keep an assignment notebook.

Students are still required to go home each day after school and tell you 3 things about the academics that went on that day in class. Students need to be responsible for keeping up with assignments in class and they are expected to be using the homework assignment books Monday -Thursday.  There is a homework calendar in the classroom as well as outside the classroom door. (All this and a six foot teacher reminding them all the time....) If assignments are still falling through the cracks with all these measures, we should conference with your child.

You can reach me by e-mail at mfwilkin@notredameparish.net or on the RVS Gradebook site.  I try to check both message systems daily unless it is summertime. During the school day, I'm often away from the computer teaching the class so I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Please contact the school office for any early dismissals or messages about after school.
