Families will pack up their SUVs, campers, trailers, or tents and head for the outer limits. Others will choose more comfortable venues, driving or flying to distant places and rooming in motels. The English call it holiday and Americans call it vacation. In any case, its about getting away, thinking about and doing something different than what daily life requires. Too many of us look to vacation as a diversion rather than as a renewal. Josef Pieper, a German Catholic philosopher, wrote a profound work on the importance of leisure decades ago. It is called Leisure, the Basis of Culture. The work is as relevant as ever. The American ethos is to work hard all ones life. Hard work is the road to success and financial security. We often frame our conversations in terms of how hard we are working and the things we have yet to do. Not to work feverishly, it is assumed, is idleness. Bigotry toward the poor or minorities is directed to the perception that they dont want to work. Many of us deceive ourselves into thinking that a vacation, a day off, a trip, some hours on the golf course, a workout in the gym, a walk or jog are leisure because they are apart from our daily routine and because they are choices that we control. However, these things may be only diversions, not leisure in the human and spiritual sense. Oftentimes a vacation or holiday may be more busy and exhausting than our daily occupations. When I began making annual retreats years ago, I wanted to make the absolutely best use of my time during that period of several days. I would pack my bag with spiritual books and journal notebooks. I would schedule my day with prayers and spiritual exercises. I would expect spiritual experiences and fruitfulness. I would come out of the retreat the same way I entered itwith a busy mind, guilt over failed expectations, and disappointed. My retreats did not include holy leisure, but spiritual busyness. Now, whenever I make my annual retreat, I bring fewer distractions and set few expectations. I use the first day or so to wind down and to rest. Gradually, I find myself in a calmer state. I begin to notice small things. I become more mindful. I let go. Leisure is fundamental to RE-creation. It is also the necessary environment for beauty, creativity, and appreciation for the arts. As Josef Pieper wrote: Leisure is not the attitude of mind of those who actively intervene, but of those who are open to everything; not of those who grab and grab hold, but of those who leave the reins loose and who are free and easy themselvesalmost like a man falling asleep, for one can only fall asleep by letting oneself go. So as you and your families vacation this summer, try to make leisure a part of it too. You will enjoy more than time apart, but renewal of mind, heart, and soul.
